On Thursday, September 19, at 6:00 PM, 49 Writers presents a reading featuring Mieke Eerkens, instructor for the 2024 Tutka Bay Writers Retreat at Kachemak Bay Campus. Eerkens will read from "All Ships Follow Me," a book about her parents’ experiences in WWII and the inheritance of war trauma. She has taught Creative Writing at the University of Iowa, UCLA Extension’s Writers’ Program, Amsterdam University, and Leiden University in The Netherlands, and currently teaches for the Iowa Summer Writing Festival and private workshops. She is currently working on a memoir about her younger years traveling with the circus.

On Thursday, September 26 at 5:00 PM come learn all you need to know to set up an irrigation system for your garden and create a game plan to make water woes a thing of the past. Farmers Carey Restino and Monica Kopp will walk you through the ways they have set up irrigation systems on their farms and brainstorm what would work best in your setting. On Saturday, October 5 at Kachemak Bay Campus, Dan Bigley tells his story about how the last thing he ever saw was the bear which took his eyes and left his life hanging by a thread. Blind and disfigured, Dan faced a long, painful journey of healing, and his story of survival transcends all expectations as each layer is revealed Come hear about Dan’s incredible journey from the brink of death to rebuilding a life that includes a master’s degree in social work from the University of Alaska-Anchorage, becoming president and CEO of Denali Family Services, and building a beautiful family of his own. This is a free event with limited seating so arrive early. Doors open at 5:30 pm. For more information call (907) 235-1674.
